Arsene Wenger needs to adjust his January plans for Arsenal

Anyone who’s watched Arsenal in recent weeks will tell you that everything is not quite right in North London, which makes Arsene Wenger’s stance on January signings concerning.

Having fallen to a three-goal deficit against Bournemouth in their last Premier League clash, Arsenal found themselves behind again against Preston North End in the FA Cup third-round. Of course, the Gunners fought back to secure positive results but alarm bells should surely be ringing.

If Arsenal’s defence can concede three goals to Bournemouth and struggle to keep Preston, a side sat mid-table in the Championship, at bay, then we can only imagine the havoc that Bayern Munich can create when the Champions League returns next month.

Despite the glaring problems within the squad, Arsene Wenger has made it clear he’s not looking to make any January signings and it’s a road Arsenal have been down before. A problem is clear, Wenger overlooks it, Arsenal fail to make progress.

Whilst Arsenal boast one of the strongest back-lines in the Premier League, on paper at least, there is still cracks within the defence that need filling – namely finding a capable left-back and a long-term replacement for Petr Cech.

Nacho Monreal fought his way back into the starting line-up with fine performances a few years back but the Spaniard, now 30, is clearly not quite the standard Arsenal require.

Meanwhile, Petr Cech has shown signs of decline this season and, whilst he hasn’t been in goal for all of those fixtures, the Gunners have kept just two clean-sheets across their last 16 games in all competitions.

On top of that, Arsenal once again find options limited in the middle of the park with Santi Cazorla still absent, and there being no signs of a capable replacement already in the squad, whilst Mohamed Elneny is away at the African Cup of Nations and Francis Coquelin picked up a knock last week.

Arsenal need long-term replacements for these three ageing and key members of their squad and it’s not like there isn’t options out there, Arsene Wenger just needs to open his wallet or he could face another disappointing season.
