Pictures of Alexis Sanchez that once adorned the Arsenal fans’ booth here in the Transfer Tavern have been removed over the course of the past couple of weeks, with Gunners supporters having grown angrier and angrier at the Chilean with each passing day.
From rumours of a bust-up with Arsene Wenger to reports that he’s desperate to leave the Emirates Stadium this summer, the once healthy relationship between supporters and star player has eroded and it seems the only possible outcome is the 28-year-old departing in a few months’ time.
Amid the host of teams linked with Sanchez, Sevilla are, perhaps, the surprise candidates, but the presence of Jorge Sampaoli in the Ramon Sanchez Pizjuan Stadium is thought to be a key factor, with the player and manager having worked together in the Chile set-up.
And now the 57-year-old tactician has poured fuel on the speculation fire by claiming that he would be “great” to have the chance to work with Sanchez again:
“it would be great to have the chance one day [to coach Sanchez],” he is quoted by Sky Sports. “He is a top, top player. One of the best forwards in the world I would say.
“I was lucky to share a time with him in the national team. We went to a World Cup together, we won the Copa America with him in the side as well, it was a very satisfying period of my career and it was great to share it with Alexis.”
There remains the slim possibility that Sampaoli moving to Barcelona to replace Luis Enrique could see Sanchez return to the Catalan club, whom he left in 2014 to join Arsenal.
Is there a realistic chance of Alexis Sanchez still being at Arsenal in 2017/18?
