Arsenal: Fans tear into Bernd Leno after his mistake against Everton costs a goal

Arsenal edged out Everton in a closely-fought encounter on Sunday, but things could have been different after indecisiveness from Bernd Leno allowed the Toffees to equalise just before half-time.

There was nothing the goalkeeper could do to stop Dominic Calvert-Lewin’s early scissor kick, but when Yerry Mina got his head to the ball late on in the first half, the German should have shown more bravery to deal with the loose ball. He failed to do so, however, and that allowed Richarlison to get his foot on the ball, and although the Brazilian made minimal contact, it was enough to direct the ball past Leno.

Understandably, supporters didn’t hold back in their criticism of the shot-stopper, who later redeemed himself in the second half with two fine saves from both of the Everton goalscorers. Leno has been terrific for Arsenal for most of the season with 3.6 average saves per match (per Wyscout), but he does seem to have a weakness in commanding his area, also making a mistake against Chelsea earlier this term that allowed Jorginho to tap into an empty net.

Some fans highlighted that aspect of his game, with a number of reactions being made to his error.
