Bittersweet transfer news is peak Arsenal as club impress at Wembley

There’s more than a few sore heads amongst the Arsenal fans in the Transfer Tavern following their Community Shield win over rivals Chelsea, though celebrations do continue today.

Indeed, with new signings Alexandre Lacazette and Sead Kolasinac impressing at Wembley as Arsene Wenger made in 9 wins in a row at the national stadium, it’s fair to say the Gooners propping up our bar are in good spirits.

So, imagine how well reports from the Daily Mirror have gone down. They claim Alexis Sanchez is ready to accept the club’s stance that he will not be sold this summer, despite reported interest from Premier League rivals Manchester City.

The Chilean superstar has just a year remaining on his deal in north London, though Le Prof has been adamant in saying the 28-year-old will not be sold this summer. Now, the former Barcelona man is said to have indicated to friends and teammates that he will STAY at the Emirates another year, even if he doesn’t sign an extension with the Gunners.

Sanchez is reportedly likely to be in line for an even more lucrative contract next summer – presumably as any potential new suitor won’t have to pay a free – though our punters hope he could be convinced to stay if Arsenal impress this season.

Landlord’s Verdict:

As ever with Arsenal, the good news is somewhat tainted. The notion of losing a £50m-rated player for free next summer is gut-wrenching one and perhaps the Chile international is just delaying the inevitable in terms of his exit.

However, at least they have a chance of convincing him to stay. Another big signing and a strong season in the Premier League may be enough, so at least the Gunners have bought themselves some time, if nothing else.
