Bundesliga side Hamburg are very interested in signing Arsenal utility man Johan Djourou this summer and are ready to compete with fellow Bundesliga outfit Hannover for his signature according to talkSPORT.
Djourou spent the second half of last season on loan with Hannover and they are thought to be keen on securing his services again for next season.
However, Hamburg’s director of sport, Oliver Kreuzer, has admitted that he is interested in bringing the 26-year-old Swiss international defender to Germany and wouldn’t mind whether it was on loan or permanently.
He told the Bild newspaper: “We would loan him, but we would also buy him, depending on what Arsenal prefer.”
Kreuzer also claimed that Hamburg are a far better outfit than Hannover and believes Djourou would prefer a move to his club at the Imtech Arena.
“Hannover played well in Europe last season, but Hamburg is Hamburg,” he continued.
“HSV is HSV, and we are just a better club.”
Kreuzer’s comments will no doubt spark a battle with Hannover for Djourou’s signature. The Swiss defender has two years remaining on his Arsenal contract but is not thought to be in the forefront of Arsene Wenger’s plans and will be allowed to leave the club this summer should the right offer come in.
Djourou has made 86 Premier League appearances for the Gunners since 2005, scoring one goal, and made 14 Bundesliga appearances for Hannover on loan last season.
We’re sure Arsenal won’t miss Djourou. Perhaps his number 20 shirt will go to Gonzalo Higuain? Let us know your thoughts below.
