Hear ye! Hear ye! Arsenal are reportedly planning a summer swoop for Ajax pair Jan Vertonghen and Maarten Stekelenburg in a deal which could cost £17 million.
Arsene Wenger is interested in signing Belgian centre-back Vertonghen, whose current price tage lies at a very modest £6.7 million. Vertonghen is also wanted by AC Milan, but Arsenal are leading the race to sign the player, because of his close friendship with fellow Belgian Thomas Vermaelen. A Goal.com source claimed, ‘he wants to join Vermaelen. He fits the bill for Arsenal because he is calm, comfortable in possession and has a strong mentality.’
The 23 year old has been at Ajax for the last 5 seasons, and in that time has scored over 10 goals from defence for the Dutch side.
But Vertonghen is not the only player Wenger is interested in this summer. In a bid to sign a quality goalkeeper, the Frenchman could be about to pull a fast one over his arch-nemisis at Old Trafford. Maarten Stekelenburg has already been linked with Manchester United (on these very pages!) but Arsenal are also keeping tabs on the keeper.
Stekelenburg could cost between £8-10 million, but a bidding war between Arsenal and United could see that figure rise dramatically. Stekelenburg is an Ajax legend, and was the goalkeeper behind Holland’s World Cup exploits in South Africa last year.
He drew plaudits for his performances for the men in Orange, though he was eventually outdone by a fine Iniesta finish.
