Comolli was integral in keeping the defensive midfielder at the club earlier this year before his move to Liverpool. The one-time French International had been linked to a host of clubs in the past including Monaco and Juventus.
At 23, the midfielder one of the youngest captains in Ligue 1. He was installed as St. Etienne’s skipper in 2009 following a host of reliable performances. Mauitdi is known for his athleticism and his pace to loose balls playing the DM role with ease despite his 5ft 9″ height.
Voted the one of the best players in Ligue 1 by L’Equipe, it’s easy to see why Comolli rates Matuidi, though it could be argued that he would be a better match for the Gunners.
Manchester United have also been linked with a move for the young Frenchman. Sir Alex is rumoured to be planning a 10-man clear out at the end of the season and may see the 23-year-old so one of his potential building blocks. Despite United’s league position, many have criticised their midfield during the current campaign and called for investment in the summer.
Liverpool may be able to beat both clubs to Matuidi’s signature if they make a bumper move during the current window. The Frenchman has never closed the door on a move to the Premier League and once even admitted that a move to England would suit him best.
Time will tell, but in the current climate, it may cost the Reds up to £10million to get their man who is still in contract until 2013. Should Liverpool move now, or wait until the summer where they might pay less, but risk being pipped? Seems Damien may have to put his thinking cap on.
