As hard as it may be, Arsenal might have to be rather thankful to Tottenham Hotspur.
Forget about sharing pleasantries regarding how well Spurs have done on the pitch and what a job Mauricio Pochettino has done with the team – that’s never going to happen; not in a million years.
However, when you can say thanks and laugh at someone else’s expense, well this might just be the time for Arsenal fans to thank their north London neighbours.
According to a report by L’Equipe (via Eurosport), Arsene Wenger’s side were interested in Olympique Lyonnais forward Clinton N’Jie.
However, the Cameroon international was not prepared to join them at the Emirates Stadium and decided Tottenham was the best move for him, joining them in a deal thought to be worth £12million (Eurosport).
“I was never scared that my transfer to Tottenham would not be confirmed,” Njie told French newspaper L’Equipe (via Eurosport). “I never spoke to Arsenal representatives on the phone, they simply contacted my agent. My choice was made, I was determined to join Tottenham.”
And, if you follow football closely, you will know Arsenal fans will have been delighted to miss out on him and dodge a £12m bullet where he is concerned.
N’Jie managed to last all of one season in the Premier League with Tottenham and failed to make a single start in his eight appearances for Mauricio Pochettino’s side in the top-flight, failing to score a single goal.
He was then loaned out to Olympique de Marseille in the summer of 2016 and remains there to this day after completing a permanent switch in the summer of 2017.
Having seen how poor he was for their fierce rivals, Arsenal must be blowing a sigh of relief that N’Jie opted for Spurs rather than them and helped them to save £12m on an addition that was would have been truly awful.
