Arsenal have dropped off the pace completely in recent times as they’ve lost two of their last three Premier League fixtures.
The Gunners’ top four hopes are slowly slipping away as Manchester United are now joint on points with them, while Chelsea extended their lead to six points at the weekend.
Worryingly, one player whose future is currently under the spotlight is Mesut Ozil, as according to the Daily Mail, Unai Emery wants to sell the German international.
Of course, the 30-year-old has been heavily criticised by supporters over the past season or so at the Emirates, but he is still arguably one of the most talented attacking midfielders in the Premier League.
Therefore, here’s TWO pros and TWO cons to kicking Mesut Ozil out of Arsenal forever…
PRO – CLEAR SPACE FOR HUNGRY AND DETERMINED PLAYERS
Arsenal have often felt the need to play the German at times this season in the hope that he finally finds some form, but this just hasn’t been the case. Indeed, this has stopped Emile Smith-Rowe from enjoying a potential run in the side as Ozil’s presence constantly gives Unai Emery a headache when it comes down to selecting his side.
So, the 30-year-old’s departure would finally create space for youngsters and other players to make the most of their hunger and determination, rather than rewarding Ozil’s laziness at times.
PRO – HELP RAISE FUNDS
The Gunners find themselves on the back foot in the race for a top four spot in the current campaign, so the January transfer window will be crucial to their pursuit.
But, with transfer funds currently limited after spending heavily back in the summer transfer window, it makes sense for the North London club to trade Ozil in for funds to aid their immediate push for a Champions League spot.
Indeed, the German isn’t getting any younger and he hasn’t really done anything to suggest he deserves to stay at the Emirates this season, so raising funds to bring in reinforcements would be a great decision.
CON – LOSING OZIL’S QUALITY AND CREATIVE SPARK ON HIS DAY
Ozil has struggled to ensure consistency and has been labelled as lazy at times, but that doesn’t change the fact that he has the ability to become one of the best attacking midfielders in world football on his day.
His creativity and passing ability can unlock any defence and for all Emery knows, he could be set for an inspired second half of the season if supporters and the club’s management get behind him.
But, the Gunners could miss out on all of this if Emery decides to pull the trigger.
CON – HARD TO FIND DIRECT REPLACEMENT
Indeed, selling Ozil would provide the Gunners with the funds required to invest in other areas and to find a replacement for the attacking midfielder. But, this is easier said than done as there aren’t many better passers of the ball in world football, with his vision also being up there with some of the best.
Finding a replacement that can ensure consistency and goals may be easy, but the Gunners’ lack of creativity has been highlighted at times during his absence this season, and it will only get worse if he leaves.
