Unai Emery has overseen Arsenal’s worst start to a Premier League season for 26 years.

The Spaniard was certainly handed a baptism of fire in the Premier League, kicking off his reign as Arsenal boss against Manchester City before travelling to face Chelsea. The Gunners were defeated in both fixtures, but the signs were promising that the squad were starting to adapt to Emery’s tactics. When their new signings have settled in, Arsenal will be back challenging at the top of the division.

Emery invested heavily in the playing squad to fix a number of glaring weaknesses. Bernd Leno was signed to add competition to Petr Cech while Sokratis Papastathopoulos plugged a gap in the defence and Lucas Torreira supplied some much-needed steel to the engine room. However, the former PSG boss failed to add a quality winger to replace Alexis Sanchez.

One man he should have signed was Marseille forward – Florian Thauvin. Valued at £45m by Transfermarkt, the winger is no stranger to the Premier League having joined Newcastle back in 2015. He failed to impress for the Magpies and later returned to Marseille where he has been scoring goals for fun.

Thauvin netted 26 goals and notched 18 assists in a superb season that saw him earn a place in France’s World Cup-winning squad ahead of the likes of Anthony Martial. Eager to prove he is not a one-season wonder, the 25-year-old kicked off the new Ligue 1 campaign with goals against Toulouse and Nimes in their opening two fixtures.

When surrounded by quality players, Thauvin thrives. His arrival would have given Emery a quality option on the wings and hand Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang more ammunition in the Arsenal attack with Thauvin averaging 2.2 key passes per game last season (WhoScored). His expert runs on the wing would also help Mesut Ozil rediscover the form that made him one of the best playmakers in the world.

Should the goals continue to flow, Arsenal simply must bring him to the Emirates in January.
