Arsenal supporters have been pretty downbeat in the Transfer Tavern this week after seeing their team go down 2-1 at Manchester United on Saturday to suffer a sixth successive Premier League away defeat.
Arsene Wenger’s men were the only team in England’s top four divisions to have failed to pick up a single point on their travels in 2018, having lost at Bournemouth, Swansea, Tottenham, Brighton, and Newcastle since the turn of the year. Yet they looked on course to end that barren run when Henrikh Mkhitaryan cancelled out Paul Pogba’s opener at Old Trafford, only for a Marouane Fellaini header in added time to secure all three points for Jose Mourinho’s Red Devils.
Subsequently, there have been many disappointed Gunners supporters in the Tavern in recent times, several of whom aren’t overly fussed by the Premier League, and are instead focusing their attentions on Thursday’s crucial Europa League clash against Atletico Madrid.
In the meantime though, there has been much for our resident Arsenal fans to get their teeth into, not least recent reports linking a whole host of top sides with right back Hector Bellerin.
However, the North London giants shouldn’t even be contemplating selling the Spain international this summer, as there is only one defender they should be getting rid of, namely Carl Jenkinson.
Ultimately, the 26-year-old has seriously struggled for regular football at the Emirates Stadium in the last few years, with his last senior appearance for the Gunners coming in their 2-0 defeat to Southampton in the EFL Cup back in November 2016.
Since then, the right back has been so far down the pecking order that he was sent out on loan to Championship side Birmingham City at the start of this season, where his plight has continued in making just seven league appearances for the struggling Blues.
And his inability to force his way into a side languishing near the bottom of the second tier is indicative of the difficulties Jenkinson is facing at present – this all after a spell at West Ham between 2014 and 2016 in which he earned 52 Premier League appearances, and ultimately performed reasonably solidly.
However, this season has been an utter disaster for the 26-year-old and further underlines his alarming decline, and with Arsenal set for a big summer what with Wenger on his way out, Jenkinson is surely one name who will be following him out of the Emirates exit door.
Whereas they simply must seek to retain fellow right back Bellerin, who although hasn’t quite been at his best this term has proven his worth to the North Londoners in the past, and at the tender age of 23 still has a bright future ahead of him – remember, it wasn’t too long ago that he was being regarded as one of the best right backs in the Premier League.
Thus, the Gunners have to forget about selling Bellerin, as there is only one defender they have to get rid of this summer, namely fellow right back Jenkinson.
