Forget Mkhitaryan and Aubameyang: This decision will go down as Arsenal’s most important in January

The Arsenal fans in the Transfer Tavern couldn’t be happier right now. The Gunners had a fantastic deadline day, with Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang moving to the Emirates Stadium after a few weeks of speculation.

Undoubtedly, a move for the Gabonese forward will go down as one of Arsenal’s most significant in recent memory, but our landlord thinks that another decision from the Gunners will be even more important – and it involves a player that is already at the club.

Arsenal announced on the 1st of February, much to the surprise of our resident Gunners, that Mesut Ozil had agreed fresh terms with the Gunners. His previous deal expired at the end of the current season, leading many to believe that he might be about to quit the club. Now, however, that doesn’t look likely to be the case – and the repercussions of that could be massive. Reportedly, according to Arsenal expert David Ornstein, the deal was agreed in January, though it wasn’t unveiled until the 1st of February.

On a basic level, Arsenal’s decision to spend big and convince him to stay will be huge on the field. He has been Arsenal’s most influential player over the last few weeks, dominating the midfield and helping create chance after chance. With the capture of Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, the German is likely to only increase in importance and efficiency, with arguably no forward better at latching onto fantastic passes – especially with his lethal poaching ability.

The importance of this deal extends far beyond that, though. The German could have earned far more away from the Emirates, but he instead chose to stay at the club. That suggests that the club remains an attractive proposition for players, and when combined with big captures like that of Mkhitaryan and Aubameyang – that sentiment is reinforced.

Not to mention, the sale of Alexis Sanchez to Man Utd left a lot of fans feeling very negative about their club, and so news of a renewal for Ozil will be important in that sense. He’s a fan favourite, and the last thing they likely wanted was to lose him.

This deal will go down as one of the most important in the history of the club, and whilst the likes of Henrikh Mkhitaryan and Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang do suggest a new tact for Arsenal – in that they are signing some of Europe’s best – the retention of Ozil shows a new desire like which we haven’t seen at the Emirates in quite some time.
