Arsenal supporters have been in high spirits in the Transfer Tavern this week after seeing their team reach the quarter-finals of the Europa League courtesy of a 5-1 aggregate victory over Italian giants AC Milan in the last 16.
Arsene Wenger’s men went into the return leg at the Emirates Stadium last week with a commanding 2-0 advantage, although there were some very nervy Gunners fans in the Tavern when Hakan Calhanoglu gave Gennaro Gattuso’s side an early lead. Nonetheless, the North London giants responded admirably with a brace from Danny Welbeck and Granit Xhaka’s second of the campaign booking their place in the last eight, where they will face CSKA Moscow next month.
Consequently, there have been many thrilled Arsenal fans in the Tavern in recent times, several of whom are daring to dream about possible Europa League glory this season, which in turn would seal their place in the Champions League next term.
In the meantime though, there has been much for our resident Gunners supporters to get their teeth into, not least recent reports linking them and indeed Tottenham with a move for Jonny Evans, who could be available for just £3 million this summer if West Brom get relegated.
And while Mauricio Pochettino’s Spurs would be a good move for the 30-year-old, he would have a greater impact and bigger challenge were he to make the move to bitter North London rivals Arsenal instead.
Ultimately, Tottenham have been better defensively than the Gunners for a fair few seasons now, with Toby Alderweireld and Jan Vertonghen striking up arguably the best central defensive partnership in the division, while Davinson Sanchez has come in this season and performed impressively as well.
And while Alderweireld looks likely to leave the club this summer given his current contract situation at the club, there remains a wealth of options available to Pochettino, with Eric Dier, Juan Foyth, and even Ben Davies able to play at centre-half.
Thus, it wouldn’t be easy for Evans to command regular football at Spurs even if Alderweireld leaves this summer, and at the age of 30, the Northern Ireland international will likely seek almost guaranteed regular football given he is probably in the second half of his playing career.
And that is much more likely to happen at Arsenal.
Other than Laurent Koscielny, the Gunners haven’t really had a towering and commanding centre-back for many years now, with the likes of Shkodran Mustafi, Rob Holding, and Calum Chambers doing well at times this term, but ultimately aren’t good enough to take Wenger’s side to the next level.
Yet Evans would be, as the 30-year-old is just as adept with the ball at his feet as he is taking on some of the biggest and toughest forwards in the division – he’d be an ideal partner for Koscielny.
And with Arsenal seemingly struggling to keep up with the rest of the top six this season, Evans could have a big impact on things at the Emirates were he to opt for them this summer, in doing so undergoing a huge challenge to resurrect the club to its lofty heights of the years previous.
As such, alongside a likelihood that he’ll play more at the Emirates, £13.5 million-rated Evans (as per Transfermarkt) should forget about a move to Tottenham, and join North London rivals Arsenal instead.
