While many of the Arsenal fans in the Transfer Tavern can be found talking both often and loudly about their title chances next term, there is the small matter of sorting out their squad to contend with.
Indeed, much has been made about the future of Jack Wilshere this summer, with plenty of interest reportedly surrounding the 24-year-old. Clubs from home and abroad are said to be keen on the England international, though the Daily Mirror reports he’s returned to training with the Gunners.
Currently working his way back to full fitness following a leg fracture while on loan with Bournemouth, Wilshere was put through his paces at the club’s Colney training base, after most of the squad returned from their pre-season tour over in the Far East.
A popular figure in the Tavern, things just haven’t worked out for the midfielder, who has constantly been blighted by injuries in recent years. Still, he was able to make 22 starts with the Cherries and failed to pull up many trees, registering just 2 assists all season.
With just a year left on his deal at Arsenal, perhaps he can prove his worth to Arsene Wenger now he’s back in training, though our north London locals don’t hold too much hope.
It would be nice to see Wilshere finally fulfil his obvious potential with Arsenal, though you get the feeling it’s just not the right environment for him.
With the Gunners moving to a new system, the likes of Granit Xhaka, Aaron Ramsey and Francis Coquelin provide enough cover in the engine room and perhaps selling up now – while they still can – would be the soundest financial thinking right now.
