New Arsenal manager Unai Emery seems to be doing something right at the North London club after the Gunners claimed their tenth consecutive victory on Monday evening, beating Leicester City 3-1.
And while many players continued their great form against the Foxes with Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang scoring two goals as a substitute again and Mesut Ozil bossing the midfield against James Maddison, the result also showed the immense improvement winger Alex Iwobi has made under Emery.
Iwobi looks like a new signing in the current Arsenal setup and seems to be getting better and better with the more minutes he gets under the belt.
Originally used as a substitute in the opening rounds of the season, the Nigerian international quickly stamped his mark under the new regime as a player that is going to let his hard work do the talking. Iwobi’s impact from the bench earned him starts in the Premier League matches against Fulham and Leicester, and it’s hard to see his spot being taken any time soon.
Emery has enjoyed rotating his squad in the league so far this season and with Iwobi’s versatility to operate on either the left and right flanks, Arsenal have been potent on the attack with the 22-year-old especially looking more threatening on the ball, compared to previous seasons.
The winger has been running with pace and desire, and doesn’t seem scared to take on defenders. His touches and controlling have also seen improvement as was evident on Monday evening, while all of this has been down to belief, according to Iwobi who expressed the manager’s confidence in him as the reason for his fine form.
“The manager has just given me the confidence to express myself and to believe in my ability, which I have been trying to show. In training, too, he is always letting me try new things – be positive, be direct and prove it in the games. It is working for me so I just have to keep it going,” said Iwobi after the match against Leicester (via the Guardian).
This freedom could be exactly what a player like Iwobi needs at this age of his career, instead of being pinned down with complicated instructions. Judging by his recent run of performances, Iwobi looks set to play a massive role in how the Arsenal season plays out.
