Just £10M Would Land Upgrade For Wishy Washy Arshavin

Arsene Wenger’s patience with Andrey Arshavin may have run its course this season with Olympique Marseille winger Andre Ayew thought to be the ideal target to replace the Russian in the summer.

Ayew, son of Ghanaian football legend Abedi Pele, has impressed for the Ligue 1 club this season after spending the last few years on-loan. The 21-year-old had been on the radar of Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger for some time, and the Frenchman is certain now is the time to sign his man.

The Ghanaian international could cost up to £10 million, but Wenger will not be put off by the price tag and believes he has unearthed another gem. Ayew who has 6 goals to his name this season has been a regular in the Marseille team. Arguably Wenger is gets it more right when he does keep his transfer policy of buying young players, considering the older ones of Arshavin, Reyes and Squillaci have failed to live up to expectations.

Ayew is seen to have all the attributes to be a success in the Premier League with, pace and strength in abundance. He would fit in well with Wenger’s football philosophy with good movement and teamwork.

The Ghana international is likely to start in tonight’s Champions League game against Manchester United with the tie delicately poised at 0-0. He could also play in the international friendly against England at Wembley on March 29.

With Ayew set for a move to Arsenal, it looks as though this may Arshavin’s last season in a Gunners shirt. Despite a promising first season, when signed in January 2009, Arshavin has struggled to show his full potential. His inconsistent form has frustrated Wenger and at the age of 29, his best years lay behind him.
