‘Last chance saloon’ – Plenty of Arsenal fans have questioned this midfielder’s future

The Arsenal fans in the Transfer Tavern have been looking at their 25-year-old defensive midfielder, Granit Xhaka ahead of the new season. At times, Xhaka has looked like a liability but it will be interesting to see how he gets on under the tutelage of Unai Emery.

The Arsenal midfield looks to be hit with a major revamp ahead of next season. Jack Wilshere and Santi Cazorla have been let go and Lucas Torreira looks to be signing to give the Gunners midfield a little bit more steel to it. This seems to be the right way to go for a lot of fans and if Torreira can partner Xhaka and get the best out of the Swiss international then we’ll have plenty of delighted Gunners in our bar.

At the moment though, that looks a long way off. Xhaka, who signed from Borussia Monchengladbach back in summer 2016, has looked shocking in Arsenal’s midfield in his two-years at the club. The 25-year-old has left his defence exposed on a number of occasions, stepping out of line and diving in, allowing the opposition more space in front of the Arsenal defence. If Emery can stamp that out of him then it will be seen as a huge success but as things stand that is very unlikely.

Whilst the Gunners’ in the Tavern would love to see Xhaka pick up some form in an Arsenal shirt, a lot of them are reaching the end of their tether with the midfielder.
