Former Leeds United man Noel Whelan has claimed that manager Marcelo Bielsa could replace Jack Clarke with Ezgjan Alioski in January.
Clarke has made just one first-team appearance for the Whites in the Championship this season and could be set for a return to parent club Tottenham Hotspur in the winter window.
However, Whelan believes that Alioski could be used as the winger alternative by the Argentine manager, claiming the North Macedonia international is a ‘brilliant weapon’.
He said: “There’s no doubt Jack Clarke will leave as Tottenham won’t allow him to stay on the bench all season.”
“You’ve got Jack Harrison, Helder Costa, Pablo Hernandez…Jamie Shackleton and Stuart Dallas can play there as well and Alioski is a brilliant weapon as well.”
“I can see him filling in as a winger, and replacing Clarke, if the first choices like Harrison and Costa are out, or come off. He’s played there most of his career, can create and score goals and is one of the best finishers in the squad.” (Source: Football Insider)
Taking a deeper dive into recent performances from the 27-year-old, and Whelan could well be right about Alioski’s potential on the wing.
He is a natural left-back, however, two goals in consecutive league games against Huddersfield Town and Hull City, show that he has the attacking-nous to arrive in the box to finish off chances.
Alioski also has the joint-second most goals of any player in the squad (4) (via WhoScored)
His positioning for the counter-attacking goal against Hull City, arriving late at the far post, shows that the timing of his runs make him a viable candidate for an attacking position.
Looking at the statistics this season, Alioski averages over one shot and one key pass per game, showing he could provide a direct threat to opposition defences when played in a forward position.
Should Clarke be allowed to leave the club due to a lack of action then there is enough options to provide Bielsa with threat from wide areas, which includes Alioski.
