Leno close: Arsenal must now follow that up with deal for £27m-rated midfield ace

Arsenal supporters in the Transfer Tavern are looking forward to the new era at their football club following the appointment of Unai Emery as Arsene Wenger’s successor last month.

Frenchman Wenger vacated his role as Gunners chief at the end of the season after 22 years in charge of the North London giants, in which time he won three Premier League titles and seven FA Cups. However, Arsenal embarked upon a testing few years under the 68-year-old, to the point that Spaniard Emery will inherit a side that finished sixth in the Premier League this season, a staggering 37 points adrift of champions Manchester City.

Nonetheless, there are many optimistic and expectant Gunners fans in the Tavern at present, several of whom are likely to be delighted with recent reports that a deal to bring Bernd Leno to the Emirates Stadium is close to completion.

And with the goalkeeper’s move seemingly close, the North London heavyweights must now follow that deal up with another in the form of £27 million-rated ace Steven N’Zonzi (as per Transfermarkt).

Ultimately, there are many issues that need addressing in that Arsenal squad, with Emery seemingly already having sorted one out by bringing Bayer Leverkusen’s Leno to the club to replace the ageing Petr Cech, who hasn’t always been at the races in recent times.

And it’s clear that the central midfield department is another which needs reinforcing this summer, what with the likes of Granit Xhaka and Mohamed Elneny not totally convincing of their abilities during their respective spells at the club.

Arguably, it’s an area of the field which the Gunners haven’t reinforced suitably for many a year now, and that is why Emery simply must kick off a new era at Arsenal by doing exactly that in the form of Sevilla’s N’Zonzi.

The France international, part of Didier Deschamps’ squad for this summer’s World Cup, is perhaps best known to English football fans for his stints at Blackburn Rovers and Stoke City, but it has been since he left the latter that the 29-year-old has moved to another level, and made him one of the most influential midfielders in La Liga.

The Frenchman helped Emery’s Sevilla win the Europa League back in 2016 and he has since gone on to play 136 times in total for the Spanish outfit, with his tally of 44 appearances this time round indicative of his importance to the La Liga side.

However, having failed to qualify for the Champions League, Sevilla may find it difficult retaining the midfielder, who himself has since admitted that he’d like to join a ‘big team’ this summer – Arsenal must take advantage.

Having worked wonders under Emery before at Sevilla, the same could well happen again at Arsenal, and with the Gunners in need of greater strength and industry in the midfield ranks, N’Zonzi’s arrival would be ideal.

Thus, with a move for Leno seemingly close, Arsenal must now seek to add to that by moving for Sevilla’s N’Zonzi in the near future.
