Arsenal supporters have been making a lot of noise in recent times after seeing their team record a ninth straight victory in all competitions at the weekend.

Unai Emery’s men went into their encounter with newly-promoted Fulham at Craven Cottage off the back of five successive wins in the Premier League, as well as two successes in the Europa League alongside victory over Brentford in the Carabao Cup. And the Gunners made it nine on the spin on Sunday in thrashing the Cottagers 5-1 in West London, with braces from Alexandre Lacazette and Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang alongside a sensational team goal finished off by Aaron Ramsey securing a comprehensive victory for the North London giants, thus moving them to within two points of top spot.

Thus, there have been many thrilled Arsenal fans up and down the country in recent times, several of whom have unsurprisingly been heaping praise on messrs Lacazette and Aubameyang, who again proved to be two of the most in-form forwards in the country with two more goals each on Sunday.

France international Lacazette was outstanding in leading the line for the Gunners against Slavisa Jokanovic’s side, bagging two really well-taken goals, paving the way for Aubameyang to do the business off the bench in netting twice in the second half to complete the rout.

And while the striking duo have been earning many rave reviews for their efforts, it was midfielder Lucas Torreira, valued at £27 million by Transfermarkt, who was arguably their unsung hero on Sunday.

The 22-year-old made the move to the Emirates Stadium during the summer amid much anticipation and excitement from Arsenal supporters, with the Uruguay international potentially the midfielder the Gunners have been crying out for in the last few years.

And early indications suggest that he could well be that man given his extremely high-level displays in the heart of the Arsenal midfield, and Sunday was another example of the ex-Sampdoria ace proving his worth to manager Emery.

Torreira made 42 of the 50 passes he attempted over the course of the 90 minutes and finished the game having had 68 touches of the ball, which while fewer than midfield partner Granit Xhaka still underlined how busy the Uruguayan was in helping things tick over in the middle of the park.

Remember, Fulham had Arsenal on the ropes for a time on Sunday, especially following Andre Schurrle’s equaliser just before the break, yet Torreira helped the Gunners get through that spell by being busy and breaking things up in the midfield.

The 22-year-old won his one and only aerial duel and indeed finished with 100% tackle success, while a team-high six interceptions underlined his excellent reading of the game and awareness to help stop Fulham in their tracks while they sought to get forward.

Clearly, the Uruguay star played a vital role in keeping things tight in the middle of the park and thus preventing Fulham to try and grow into the match, as such providing the platform for messrs Lacazette and Aubameyang to do the business in the final third of the pitch.

The attacking pair will get lots of plaudits for their efforts on Sunday, but it was the exploits of midfielder Torreira which means he was their unsung hero against Jokanovic’s Fulham.
