Arsenal continued their poor start to the Premier League season with another defeat at the hands of Chelsea.

The Gunners haven’t lost their opening two games in a Premier League season since 1992 meaning Unai Emery has recorded their worst start to a league campaign in 26 years. Replacing Arsene Wenger was always going to be tough, and Arsenal were handed a tough start against Manchester City and Chelsea. Emery will be hoping to address their slide against West Ham at the Emirates this weekend.

Despite being just two games into the season, question marks have been raised over Arsenal midfielder – Granit Xhaka. The Swiss international has been a polarising figure since joining from Borussia Monchengladbach and was abysmal against the Blues. Xhaka was carded before being substituted at half-time by the Spaniard which was a damning indictment of his recent showings. He is nowhere near good enough to start in the Gunners midfield.

When the transfer window reopens in January, Arsenal should try to sign Lyon linchpin – Lucas Tousart. Valued at £22.5m by Transfermarkt, the 21-year-old is one of the brightest prospects emerging from Ligue 1 after breaking into the first-team. He made 37 appearances last season, helping Lyon secure third place to secure Champions League football again.

Signing Tousart would give the Arsenal defence the protection they have been crying out for. The Frenchman averaged 2.9 tackles per game last season and made 1.9 interceptions (WhoScored). Alongside Lucas Torreira, Arsenal would have the perfect midfield pivot to allow their attackers to flourish.

Ditching Xhaka for Tousart could prove to be Emery’s best transfer decision yet.
