Following Sven Mislintat’s untimely departure, Arsenal will have been frantically looking for an able replacement. Surely, the void left by the German’s departure can only go empty for so long, considering how important sporting directors and the like are to European powerhouses these days. The Gunners simply cannot be left behind.
Unai Emery might have finally found the winning combination in the field, but behind the scenes, the North London giants are – hopefully for the fans – still looking to make additions to add intelligence to their management.
One such target to become their sporting director is Marc Overmars, currently working with AFC Ajax. The former Dutch international’s body of work in the Netherlands’ capital, with proof coming in Ajax’s stunning demolition of Real Madrid. Not only would bringing Overmars to help make Arsenal a better-run club, he can also bring his assets with him.
Overmars’ indicated to Spanish outlet AS he will want to bring captain Matthijs de Ligt with him wherever he goes next, having been linked with a return to his former club in a behind the scenes role by the Daily Mirror back in January.
Well, if this doesn’t get the Gunners’ attention, nothing else will.
Indeed, De Ligt could be a crown jewel for Arsenal, who are desperately on the lookout for better defenders to solve their problems.
He’s led from the front this season as a natural born leader, helping the Dutch giants keep 13 clean-sheets from 22 appearances (stats via Transfermarkt). An assertive, composed defender who has all the attributes of becoming among the best in the world soon, De Ligt is hot property right now.
Being able to pull off this coup would not only sort Arsenal’s defence for the next decade, but it’ll also be a statement of intent.
As a former player and fan favourite at Arsenal himself, Overmars surely won’t say no to the Gunners and if he can truly bring the sensational De Ligt with him, they shouldn’t hesitate at bringing them both in to usher in a new era.
