Arsenal kicked off their 2018/19 Premier League campaign with a defeat at the hands of Manchester City.

An early Raheem Sterling goal handed the Citizens an early lead – the England international was allowed far too much space before shooting from outside the box. Arsenal failed to string attacks together and looked vulnerable at the back. Sergio Aguero should have made it two before Bernardo Silva put the result beyond any doubt.

Despite the result, there were positives to take from Unai Emery’s first game in charge. One of which was the performance of new signing – Matteo Guendouzi. The youngster was signed in the summer from Lorient in a deal worth £7.2m. His role in the side was unclear given the talent on offer in the Arsenal engine room.

However, Emery placed his faith in the 19-year-old to start against the reigning champions. Managing the talent City have at their disposal was always going to be difficult for the defensive midfielder, but he was the best Arsenal player of the pitch. His performance wasn’t faultless and had some difficult moments throughout but showed the real quality he possesses.

His mistakes will disappear in time as he adjusts to life in England and his team-mates. Playing alongside Lucas Torreira, who started from the bench, will also ease his transition to the Premier League.

Making your debut against arguably the best team in the world was always going to be hard. Arsenal fans should give Guendouzi time to settle in before they judge him because he will surprise many.
