More bad news for Wenger: Arsenal suffer big blow ahead of Man City clash

Arsenal supporters have been drowning their sorrows in the Transfer Tavern this week after seeing their side humbled by Manchester City in the Carabao Cup final at Wembley on Sunday, going down 3-0 to the North West outfit.

Arsene Wenger’s men got past Doncaster Rovers, Norwich City, West Ham, and Chelsea en route to the first cup final of the campaign, but the Gunners produced a limp display against Pep Guardiola’s side to come out second-best at the national stadium. Goals from Sergio Aguero, Vincent Kompany, and David Silva secured a routine success for the Citizens, in turn clinching their third League Cup crown in the last five years, at the same time making Wenger wait at least another season for his first title.

Consequently, there have been many disappointed and angry Arsenal fans in the Tavern in recent times, and their mood is unlikely to be improved by recent comments from Wenger in his pre-City press conference (via fitness expert Ben Dinnery on Twitter), which suggests that defender Nacho Monreal will miss the Premier League clash with Guardiola’s side on Thursday.

The 32-year-old has been an influential figure on the pitch for the North London giants this season with 23 Premier League starts so far, in which time he has chipped in with four crucial goals and a few vital assists to keep Wenger’s side just about in top four contention.

However, the Spaniard was hauled off after just 26 minutes in the Carabao Cup final on Sunday, and Wenger has since disclosed ever more bad news by confirming that he will miss Thursday’s league meeting with the Citizens due to an ‘inflamed back’.

And with Monreal also facing the prospect of missing out against AC Milan in the Europa League next week, this injury setback is sure to come as a big blow to Wenger and indeed the club’s supporters ahead of a potentially season-defining week.

Landlord’s verdict: Nacho Monreal lasted just 26 minutes against Manchester City in the Carabao Cup final on Sunday, being withdrawn by manager Arsene Wenger due to injury.

And it turns out that the Spaniard has suffered an ‘inflamed back’, which the Gunners chief has confirmed will keep him out of Thursday’s Premier League meeting with Pep Guardiola’s men.

If that alone isn’t a big enough blow for the North London giants, then the prospect of Monreal, a hugely influential player for the club this term, missing next week’s Europa League clash with AC Milan certainly will be.
