Arsenal supporters have been making a lot of noise in the Transfer Tavern in the last few hours after seeing their side book their place in the last eight of the Europa League courtesy of a 5-1 aggregate victory over Italian giants AC Milan.
Arsene Wenger’s men beat the Serie A outfit 2-0 in the San Siro last week to set them up perfectly for yesterday’s return leg in North London, although Gennaro Gattuso’s side made them sweat by grabbing the opening goal of the game through Hakan Calhanoglu. However, the Gunners hit back as a brace from Danny Welbeck and Granit Xhaka’s third goal of the campaign sealed a routine victory on the night, thus securing Arsenal’s spot in the quarter-finals of Europe’s secondary competition, which appears at the moment to be their best way of qualifying for the Champions League next season.
Subsequently, there have been many buoyant Gunners fans in the Tavern in recent times, and there may be some more good news in the offing if a recent report from The Daily Mirror is anything to go by, which suggests that midfielder Mohamed Elneny is in line for a new deal with the club.
The 25-year-old made the move to the Emirates Stadium back in 2016 and has since gone on to make 66 appearances for the North London giants, 26 of which coming this term to help Wenger’s side to sixth place in the Premier League, the final of the Carabao Cup, and last eight of the Europa League.
In fact, the Egypt international has played all ten of their European encounters this season, and with four starts in their last seven league matches as well, it appears that the midfielder is slowly but surely staking a claim for a regular first team spot in a position Arsenal have struggled to fill efficiently in recent years.
But given his recent efforts in the heart of the Arsenal midfield, this update is sure to come as good news to our resident Gunners fans, many of whom have been impressed with the 25-year-old in recent weeks.
Landlord’s verdict: Mohamed Elneny could well have left Arsenal during the summer transfer window, with the Gunners reportedly willing to move the Egypt international on after only 22 appearances in the 2016/17 campaign.
Yet the 25-year-old has slowly but surely become a more prominent member of Arsene Wenger’s squad in the last few months, and has impressed in the heart of their midfield in recent times to suggest that he could nail down a place in the starting eleven for the months to follow, and possibly be the answer to the long-term problem in that midfield area.
And his efforts may well be rewarded as reports suggest that a new deal is in the offing for Elneny, which is an update likely to come as good news to our resident Arsenal fans, several of whom remain in buoyant mood after Thursday’s impressive Europa League success over AC Milan.
