Nicolo Barella: What’s missing from Arsenal’s impressive new midfield

Arsenal will be searching for a replacement for Aaron Ramsey who looks set to leave the club after failing to agree terms on a new contract.

Ramsey is the club’s longest serving player but his time with the Gunners looks set to come to an abrupt end. The club are unwilling to meet the player’s demands and are resigned to losing him on a free transfer when his contract expires in the summer. With clubs surely circling like sharks, Arsenal may be tempted to cash in during the January transfer window.

Signing a replacement for the Wales international would be a smart move by Unai Emery, and the Spaniard must consider a move for Cagliari hotshot – Nicolo Barella. Valued at £22.5m by Transfermarkt, the Italian has developed into a crucial player for the club after progressing through their youth ranks. Barella has made eight appearances in the Serie A this season, and his fantastic performances were rewarded with his first call-up to Italy’s senior national side.

The 21-year-old is the ideal box-to-box midfielder to suit Emery’s 4-2-3-1 system. Alongside Lucas Torreira in the engine room, Barella could take his game to the next level. Similar to Torreira, the Italian loves to get stuck in, averaging 2.6 tackles per game this season. The youngster also reads the game exceptionally well, averaging 2.1 interceptions per game in the Serie A. Barella possesses a wonderful range of passing and has the quality to unlock defences – averaging 1.5 key passes per game so far this season (WhoScored).

It would take a massive fee to lure him from Italy, but it would definitely be money well spent by the Gunners.
