Alexis Sanchez finally left Arsenal earlier this week, ending a long running saga to join Manchester United in a swap deal with Henrikh Mkhitaryan. And the Arsenal fans in the Transfer Tavern admitted that they were quite impressed with this deal. Rather than lose the Chilean attacker for free in the summer, they have managed to get an impressive attacking midfielder in return.
But Sanchez might not be alone in leaving the Gunners. Mesut Ozil has been strongly linked with an exit and they could well lose the Germany international in the summer if they do not sell him this month. Other fringe players, such as Mathieu Debuchy, have also been linked with an exit and Theo Walcott has already left the club to join Everton.
But one player who should definitely consider leaving The Emirates Stadium this month is Olivier Giroud. Arsene Wenger likes having the Frenchman as a back-up option to Alexandre Lacazette but he needs to go to a club who can offer him regular playing time.
Giroud clearly wants to make the France international squad for this summer’s World Cup in Russia but there are a number of other strikers competing for those spots. The likes of Alexandre Lacazette, Antoine Griezmann, Kylian Mbappe, Kevin Gameiro and Karim Benzema will be vying for spaces in the squads and this could force Giroud out.
There are likely to be a number of teams willing to take the 31-year-old this January from both lower down in the Premier League and abroad. Giroud should take these offers seriously if they come in to enhance his chances of making the France squad.
