Arsenal supporters in the Transfer Tavern are very much looking forward to the new era under new manager Unai Emery, who replaced Arsene Wenger in the Gunners hotseat earlier this month.
Frenchman Wenger left his role as the club’s boss at the end of the 2017/18 season after 22 years in charge of the North London giants, in which time he won three Premier League titles and a record seven FA Cup crowns. However, things haven’t been as successful for the 68-year-old in recent years, to the point that Emery is taking over a team that finished sixth in the Premier League this term, an incredible 37 points adrift of champions Manchester City.
Nonetheless, there are many optimistic Arsenal fans in the Tavern at present given Emery’s recent success at Paris Saint-Germain and Sevilla, and they are likely to be further intrigued by recent reports that the new boss will hold talks with Aaron Ramsey next week over his future.
And securing an agreement with the Wales international is without doubt the most important deal the new Gunners chief can strike this summer, given his efforts for the club during the 2017/18 season.
Ultimately, after a couple of below-par campaigns by the Welshman’s very high standards, the 27-year-old returned to form this time round with an impressive 11 goals and 12 assists in all competitions, seven goals and ten assists of which coming in their run to sixth place in the Premier League.
And those numbers are particularly impressive given that Ramsey missed six games over the Christmas period due to injury, and indeed the odd match here and there in the second half of the campaign – as such, he impressively averaged 107 minutes per direct contribution.
And for Arsenal to push on next time round under new manager Emery, they simply have to retain their best players, with there too many occasions over the years whereby they have let contracts run into the last year, and then find themselves in a hopeless situation (Alexis Sanchez the most notable one).
As such, they have to learn from those situations by securing an agreement with Ramsey this summer, as while Emery has much attacking talent at his disposal heading into the new season, few are more influential to Arsenal than the 27-year-old Welshman.
Be it playing in a slightly deeper midfield role, as he did at times in the first half of the campaign, or indeed slightly further forward, Ramsey affected games in both roles this time round to give Emery plenty of options heading into the new season.
Thus, securing an agreement with the Wales international over his future at the Emirates Stadium is the most important deal the Gunners boss can strike this summer.
