Securing this key agreement this summer would represent Arsenal’s best business in years

Arsenal supporters have been in fine voice in the Transfer Tavern in the last week or so following their side’s impressive 5-1 aggregate success over AC Milan in the Europa League, which has kept this season’s silverware hopes very much alive.

Arsene Wenger’s men were 2-0 up from the first leg at the San Siro ahead of the return leg in North London back on March 15, yet were made to sweat by the Italian giants when Hakan Calhanoglu gave the visitors the lead at the Emirates Stadium. Nonetheless, the Gunners responded brilliantly as a brace from Danny Welbeck alongside Granit Xhaka’s second goal of the season secured a routine victory for Wenger’s side, thus booking their place in the last eight of Europe’s secondary competition, where they will face CSKA Moscow next month.

Consequently, there have been many delighted Gunners fans in the Tavern in recent times, several of whom are hoping their side can build upon that fine success over AC Milan when they return to Premier League action against Stoke City on Sunday.

In the meantime though, there has been much for our resident Arsenal supporters to discuss, not least recent reports linking Juventus with a summer move for midfielder Aaron Ramsey, what with the Welshman’s contract up in 2019.

As such, while Wenger’s side are likely to want additions during the summer transfer window, securing an agreement with the 27-year-old over a new deal would undoubtedly be the best piece of business Arsenal can do during the close season.

Ultimately, Ramsey has enjoyed a stellar season at the Emirates with seven goals and ten assists in 23 appearances in all competitions, which is already his best goal-scoring return for the Gunners since the 2014/15 campaign.

And while he has somewhat struggled with injury in the last few months, his consistent run in the side in the first half of the season saw Wenger’s men really reap the rewards, with all of Ramsey’s eight league assists coming before he suffered a hamstring problem in the middle of December.

Obviously, Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang’s arrival during the January transfer window, alongside the new deal for Mesut Ozil, means the Gunners are supremely well-stocked in the attacking department, but Ramsey’s influence for the club this term means that he remains one of the first-choices in that trio behind the main man.

And if Arsenal are looking to bridge the gap to the top six, a gap which has been getting ever wider in the last few years, they cannot be in the business of selling their best players.

Again, just like the situation with Alexis Sanchez, the club have to be criticised for letting Ramsey’s contract get this close to expiration, but now they must act to pen the Wales international down to a new deal to fend off reported interest from Juventus and indeed Manchester United.

And given where Arsenal are at present, and how influential the 27-year-old has been in recent times, striking an agreement with the midfielder over a new deal would be the best business the Gunners can do this summer, and may even be the best business they have done in many years.
