Arsenal supporters have been making a lot of noise in the Transfer Tavern in the last few hours after seeing their side reach the quarter-finals of the Europa League with an impressive 5-1 aggregate victory over AC Milan in the last 16.
Arsene Wenger’s men went into Thursday’s return leg at the Emirates Stadium with a 2-0 advantage having won comfortably at the San Siro a week previous, and thus very much in the driving seat for progression to the last eight. Yet the Italian giants gave them something to think about on Thursday night as Hakan Calhanoglu gave Gennaro Gattuso’s side the lead, only for the Gunners to hit back as a Danny Welbeck brace alongside Granit Xhaka’s third goal of the campaign sealed the win for Wenger’s side, who will face CSKA Moscow in the quarter-finals next month.
Subsequently, there have been many delighted Arsenal fans in the Tavern in recent times, several of whom are daring to dream about their side going on to win the Europa League this season, an outcome which would see them qualify for the Champions League next term.
In the meantime though, there has been plenty for our resident Gunners supporters to get their teeth into, not least recent reports suggesting that midfielder Mohamed Elneny is in line for a new deal at the club.
And while Jack Wilshere’s future is also subject to speculation at present, securing an agreement with Elneny could turn out to be one of the best deals Arsenal can get done this year.
Ultimately, things didn’t look good for the Egypt international ahead of last summer, with reports suggesting that the Gunners were willing to sell the 25-year-old after making just 14 Premier League appearances last season, and not overly impressing in that time.
However, the midfielder has slowly but surely propelled himself back into first team reckoning in recent times with some impressive performances in the Arsenal midfield, most notably in their 3-0 win over Watford last weekend.
And this must be good news for Wenger and indeed the club’s supporters, as Elneny could be the answer to their glaring central midfield problems, which have arguably plagued their most recent attempts at winning the Premier League title.
Granit Xhaka certainly has ability, but too often the Switzerland international has under-performed and not done his defensive duties well enough, whereas 25-year-old Elneny has the physicality to assert dominance in the middle of the park while also combining that with intelligent passes and decision-making.
Yes, Elneny still has room for improvement, but recent displays suggest that he could do a very important job in that midfield for Arsenal, and could thus be a key player for the club in the years to come in their bid to get back among the country’s elite.
Thus, securing an agreement with the Egypt international would be one of the best pieces of business the Gunners could do this year.
