Selling Lucas Perez for such a paltry fee is terrible business from Arsenal

Arsenal’s deadline day was a fairly boring one in comparison to some other clubs in the league – aside from Manchester United.

Under Unai Emery, the club completed their business early in the summer and brought in five new players to the first-team squad.

As the last few weeks of the window ticked down, the club were linked with a move for Barcelona striker Ousmane Dembele, but that seemed a bit of a far-fetched deal.

The Gunners were also linked with a move for Sevilla midfielder Steven Nzonzi, but much like the Dembele rumour, nothing came about.

More likely, Arsenal were looking to sell some of their squad players, namely Lucas Perez.

In what seems unbelievably good business for West Ham, the Gunners somehow sanctioned a deal for the Spaniard to join the East London club for a paltry fee of £4 million.

The Breakdown

When looking at his stats, the deal just looks worse and worse.

On loan at his former club Deportivo La Coruna, Perez scored eight goals to go along with six assists. In the one season where he actually played for the club, Perez scored seven goals in 21 games, nine of those being starts. Before he made the move to Arsenal, he scored 17 goals and 10 assists for Deportivo.

Moreover, with only four out-and-out wingers at the club, one being Joel Campbell, it just simply doesn’t make sense as to why the Gunners would not only sell Perez, but for such a small fee.

After a superb summer, new boss Emery might have just made his first big mistake.
