Sheffield United are interested in Leeds United midfielder Kalvin Phillips with hours remaining in the transfer window.
The Star report that the newly-promoted Premier League side have Phillips as one of their potential signings before the closure of the transfer window. The Leeds star has also been linked with a move to Aston Villa (per the Telegraph), who too will be making their comeback year in the English top-flight this season.
Despite interest from Premier League sides, Phillips was still included in Leeds’ opening game of the season against Bristol City, playing the full 90 minutes as Marcelo Bielsa’s side won 3-1.
With Chris Wilder admitting earlier this week in the aforementioned Star report that he is keen on signing a new midfielder before the closure of the summer transfer window, Phillips could stand to be an excellent addition to the Blades’ squad if the Premier League side can get a deal through.
As a scout report from Total Football Analysis shows, Phillips is a player that relishes playing in the defensive half of the pitch and is a constant force in patrolling that area of the field, making himself available in space and reacting well to close down opposing players.
As the Guardian explained in their season preview for Sheffield United, Wilder tends to deploy a 3-4-1-2 formation, with the two central midfielders acting in tandem with each other with one dropping back and one moving further up to join the attack, a role in the former that Phillips could do for the Blades.
With Sheffield United in the market for a new midfielder, Phillips could be a smart option for Wilder’s side.
The Blades will need to move fast for the Leeds star, though, who has also caught the eye of Villa, but with Phillips already exhibiting the skills needed to play in Sheffield United’s system, Wilder would be smart to make a late move for the midfielder.
