Sokratis deserves every word of Arsenal fans’ praise

Arsenal fans have been discussing the performances of summer signing Sokratis Papastathopoulos this season and they’ve been reasonably happy with what they’ve seen so far.

While Liverpool splashed the cash this summer, Arsenal were on the more frugal side of the transfer market. Unai Emery was given a tough start to the season as Arsenal were handed games against Manchester City and Chelsea and to some it looked as though the Gunners were up to their old tricks again. However, with a new manager and a few new players it was always going to take time for Arsenal to settle into a rhythm.

Arsenal signed Sokratis from Borussia Dortmund this summer for a £14.4 million fee and at first, it was unsure how good the Greek international was going to be. The former Borussia Dortmund player has so far been one of the more solid players for Arsenal this season.

Recently, one of our writers did a piece on how well rated Sokratis was by the Arsenal faithful, and the fans are completely right to praise the defender. Although he may have made a few mistakes in his Arsenal career, so far the former Dortmund man has been pretty solid.

Like most defenders in the league, Sokratis is one that likes to get on the front foot and try to pressure the player on the ball instantly. Moreover, the Greek defender isn’t the quickest and at times is still vulnerable to being caught out by a pacey winger. What must be said, however, is that he hasn’t shown those weaknesses too often in his early Arsenal career.

We’re only three games into the season but it seems Arsenal may have finally found a defender that could finally solve the Gunners’ porous backline. While Shkodran Mustafi looks like he is ready to make mistake after mistake, his new partner looks extremely solid. Furthermore, it looks as though he could be a potential leader for a side that has lacked them over the last decade or so.

Sokratis had a relatively below-par season for Dortmund, which was an anomaly for a player that for most of his career in Germany was one of the best in the league. Overall he has the ability to play out from the back but also has a toughness that not many Premier League defenders have nowadays. While Laurent Koscielny is still out with an injury, Arsenal may have found a player who could be a top player for the Gunners.
