The Arsenal fans here in the Transfer Tavern couldn’t quite believe what they were hearing earlier this week. Indeed, though Arsene Wenger has invoked the ire of the Gunners’ faithful over the years, Olivier Giroud’s comments in regards to his move to Chelsea have our north London locals fuming.
Giroud was quoted in the Daily Mail earlier this week, revealing the fact Le Prof made it very easy for him to leave the Emirates Stadium in January and move to bitter rivals, Chelsea. While Wenger will undoubtedly point to the fact that now has Pierre-Emerick Aubamayeng at his disposal as a replacement, letting the Frenchman simply walk away was a stupid decision.
Even during his early days at Stamford Bridge, the Les Bleus ace looks a natural fit. His wonderful ability to hold the ball up will likely stand him in good stead when it comes to creating partnerships with the likes of Eden Hazard, Pedro and Willian and gives Chelsea a Premier League-proven frontline. Though Aubamayeng may be a more exciting striker, his early days in north London do not look as easy and nobody quite knows how he’ll work with Alexandre Lacazette.
Arsenal may have received a fairly sizeable fee for a back-up striker in the autumn of his career, though making a rival stronger with such ease was a stupid transfer decision. Though the top four looks out of sight for Arsenal this season, the idea of seeing Giroud thrive at Chelsea next season when they will once again battle for the same kind of season targets will surely come back to haunt the Gunners.
