Nut job Lehman is back! Arsenal are preparing to bring the German out of retirement on a short term deal to resolve their goalkeeping crisis. I for one have missed his theatrics and it would be amusing to see his Premiership comeback.
Not doubting his goalkeeping capabilities however, I believe he is Arsenal ‘s best goalie since David Seaman. Whether Arsenal fans want him back is another matter but Wenger is thought to believe Lehmann still has the ability do the job even at 41.
The former Germany No.1 is currently working at the north London club completing some coaching badges, though it is believed he has held discussions with Arsene Wenger about helping to solve the Gunners’ sudden goalkeeping problem, according to The Daily Mail.
Wenger is currently without his recent first-choice keeper, Wojciech Szczesny, who has a dislocated finger, and Lukasz Fabianski, who has been ruled out for the reminder of the season with a shoulder injury.
Lehmann made 199 first-team appearances and kept 79 clean sheets for the Gunners in a five-year spell, and could be a solution to Wenger’s current problems as the manager has searched unsuccessfully so far for a keeper to bring in on an emergency loan as cover for Manuel Almunia.
Manual Almunia, while having a spell as number one, isn’t believed to be the long term solution and may be off loaded in the summer.
Lehmann left Arsenal three years ago and retired from professional football at the end of last season after returning to Germany with Stuttgart.
