According to a recent report from The Independent, Arsenal are interested in a January move for James Rodriguez. The 27-year-old currently plays his football at Bundesliga giants Bayern Munich on loan from European champions Real Madrid, although struggles for regular game time under Niko Kovac has plunged his future at the German side into huge doubt.
And reports suggest that Unai Emery’s Gunners are interested in a move for the Colombia international, and with head of recruitment Sven Mislintat leaving the club next month, the German must seek to finish on a high by luring Rodriguez to the Emirates Stadium, a signing that could inspire Arsenal to a top four finish in the Premier League table.
Ultimately, the Gunners’ 2-0 success over Chelsea at the weekend has brought Emery’s men to within three points of the Blues in the race for fourth place in the English top-flight, while sixth place Manchester United are very much in the mix as well having won their last six Premier League matches.
As such, it is very much on for Arsenal to return to the top four and thus the Champions League after two seasons away from Europe’s elite competition, although reinforcements do appear needed this month given the Gunners have stuttered somewhat in recent weeks with three defeats in their last seven league games.
And with Mesut Ozil’s future at the North London giants far from certain, and Aaron Ramsey set to join Juventus come the summer, Emery may be looking to strengthen his attacking options this month in a bid to enhance their chances of a top four finish – Rodriguez’s arrival would certainly do just that.
The 27-year-old may have struggled for regular football this time round at Bayern, although injuries have played a part in his demise, but one mustn’t forget the extremely high-level displays the Colombian produced in the early stages of his stint at Real Madrid, which all came about after he won the Golden Boot at the 2014 World Cup in Brazil.
The attacker has scored 36 goals and laid on 40 assists in only 111 appearances for Real since moving there in the summer of 2014, while his tally of eight goals and 14 assists for Bayern last term not only helped them win the Bundesliga for the sixth successive season, but also underlined to everyone just how much ability Rodriguez has despite falling down the Real pecking order.
And in an Arsenal side with the likes of Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang and Alexandre Lacazette leading the line, the 27-year-old could seriously flourish by orchestrating things just behind them in a creative role, thus likely laying on plenty of goal-scoring opportunities for the prolific duo – ultimately, the Gunners could carry an even greater threat in the final third.
And with Mislintat leaving his role at the Emirates Stadium, only 14 months after joining but in that time overseeing what many felt was a solid summer transfer window last time round, the German must seek to finish on a high by luring Rodriguez to North London – doing so would certainly aid Arsenal’s hopes of finishing in the Premier League’s top four this term.
