Arsenal have had some cracking defenders over the years.

Tony Adams was an absolute lion. Sol Campbell hardly ever got caught out at the back. Then you've got Martin Keown, Lee Dixon and Nigel Winterburn plus many more the list really could go on for a while.

We could mention Ashley Cole too, but our resident punters in the Transfer Tavern who are Arsenal inclined would really rather we didn't.

Nevertheless, despite some of these great names marshalling the Gunners defence over the years, they have somewhat fallen off the wagon a bit recently when it comes to signing decent defensive players.

Arsene Wenger hasn't bought many good ones over the last few years aside from Laurent Koscielny and maybe Shkodran Mustafi.

Our landlord can't believe, in fact, some of the defenders to have played for Arsenal in the last ten years and thinks these three are the absolute worst...

Johan Djourou

Djourou summed up a period of poor, and we mean poor, Arsenal signings.

He was at the club at the same time as Gervinho, Marouane Chamakh and Nicklas Bendtner which the fantastic four they were not.

It's eye-wateringly painful to look back on that period for Gunners fans with some of the players on show so thank us later for reminding you of it.

Phillipe Senderos

Philippe Senderos

How was this man a Premier League defender? How did he some how manage a spell at AC Milan too? Sometimes football offers up these questions and simply no-one knows the answer to them.

Our landlord reckons even if you asked Arsene Wenger why he signed Senderos he would be at a complete loss to give you a decent reason. Baffling.

Gabriel Paulista

Gabriel

He's just not a Premier League class defender.

Gabriel has no real physical strength and his naivety at the back came to the fore last season at Stamford Bridge, as he bit the bait Diego Costa had dangled out in front of him.

Whether or not you agree with what the striker did is a different story but there can be no doubt that the Arsenal man highlighted his weaknesses a lot there.
