Arsenal have an unfamiliar feel this Summer as they for once enter pre-season without Arsene Wenger, who had control of the Gunners since 1996
A 6th placed finish, missing out on the Champions League once again, will be on the minds of the Emirates faithful heading into the next campaign.
A deeply frustrating season, there are several players who are deemed to have underperformed.
Emery has made several new additions to his Arsenal side already, bringing in the likes of Stephan Lichsteiner, Bernd Leno and Sokratis Papastathopoulos.
With these new additions to the squad, the existing players will nearly all be fighting for their places.
With that in mind, these are two players who seriously needed to impress Unai Emery in pre-season…
Something of a break out star last season, 20 year old Ainsley Maitland-Niles cannot afford to relax. He must once again work hard to prove he is worthy of a place in the Arsenal starting line up.
Deployed mainly as a wing back last season, but favouring playing in midfield, Maitland-Niles must stand out wherever he is deployed in pre-season.
Criticised for his performances last season, the Nigerian would have to do something quite special in pre-season if he has any chance of proving his worth to Emery. The finishing ability of the forward has been majorly called into question.
Three goals in 26 Premier League appearances last time out did nothing to enthuse the Arsenal support. Only some top notch performances and goal scoring in pre-season will put him on Emery’s radar.
