Arsenal fans have endured a difficult campaign this season and things could become difficult to bear in the summer, as the likes of Alexis Sanchez and Mesut Ozil continue to be linked with an exit.
The Gunners’ superstar pairing are both set to enter the final 12 months of their current deals at the Emirates Stadium and exits seem increasingly likely, especially for Chilean ace Alexis Sanchez.
Arsenal can expect a bumper pay-day from any sale of the two-time Copa America champions, but have to reinvest that money back into the squad if they are to compete for significant honours next season and replacing Alexis will not be easy.
However, there is top-class players available out there and the ideal replacement for Alexis may well be Napoli ace Dries Mertens.
30-year-old Mertens has excelled in the Serie A this season, boasting an incredible record of 25 goals and ten assists in 33 appearances, whilst adding another five goals to his tally from the Naples outfit’s Champions League venture.
The Belgian ace has been linked with an exit from the Stadio San Paolo this summer, with West Ham the latest club to be linked with an ambitious move, but Arsenal should swoop-in and seal a deal ahead of their London rivals.
Whilst Mertens is a fair bit older than Alexis Sanchez, his contribution to the side would be just as great and the experience he would provide Arsenal’s attack would be extremely beneficial – and it would allow Arsenal to continue developing young Alex Iwobi.
Securing a player who has netted 25 league goals this term would also be a major statement of intent and our landlord agrees he’d be the ideal recruit for Arsenal this summer.
