Saying ‘we’ve been here before with Arsenal,’ used to be a joke but now, if you’re a Gunners fan or not, it’s a far more sinister statement.
If you missed the outpouring of blame and verbal castigation towards Arsenal, their players and Arsene Wenger last night then you did very well as they got hammered 5-1 away at Bayern Munich.
Once again the Gunners have done their very best at throwing away their season when things got tough and, whilst the laughter will roll on and the pressure will crank up on their French boss, one group can no longer be getting off lightly – the players.
There’s an obvious mental deficiency when it comes to big games with the Arsenal squad and there has been for some time.
And whilst you’d argue Arsene Wenger should be doing more to change that up it’s the typical weakness of the players that they’re hiding behind such an excuse.
If the approach of one man in the dugout can cripple pretty much every single member of the squad as we’re meant to believe surely, equally, one player stepping up and ruffling a few feathers would have exactly the same impact in the opposite direction.
Wenger might wrongly use the softly softly approach but shouldn’t these professional footballers have enough about them regardless to fire themselves and think ‘we’re getting ribbed by everyone here, let’s show some fight.’
They get humiliated time and time again and then hide behind the idea that Wenger has made them like that but that’s flimsy at best and the Gunners need to ship the fragile out as soon as possible.
