Arsenal supporters have been in high spirits in the Transfer Tavern this week after seeing their side edge past Premier League strugglers Southampton 3-2 at the Emirates Stadium to keep up the pressure on fifth place Chelsea.
Arsene Wenger’s men went into their clash with the South Coast outfit five points adrift of defending champions Chelsea in the division, what with the Blues facing West Ham later on Sunday. And the Gunners reduced the arrears to just two points prior to the Blues’ kick-off as a brace from Danny Welbeck following Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang’s 28th minute strike saw off the spirited Saints, and with Chelsea only drawing 1-1 with the Hammers later in the day, Wenger’s side are now just three points behind Antonio Conte’s team with six games to go.
Subsequently, there have been many happy Gunners fans in the Tavern in recent times, several of whom are hoping their fine run of form will set them up perfectly to get the job done against CSKA Moscow in the Europa League on Thursday night, what with Arsenal 4-1 up on aggregate.
Nonetheless, several of our resident Arsenal fans are already turning their attentions towards the summer and what business their side may seek to do, with many of the opinion that they simply must dispose of £3.15 million-rated Carl Jenkinson (as per Transfermarkt) during the close season.
Ultimately, the 26-year-old has endured a miserable few years at the Emirates Stadium, to the point that he is currently on loan at Championship strugglers Birmingham City, this all after successive temporary spells at West Ham.
In fact, the full back has just 62 appearances to show for his time at Arsenal which began back in 2011, with his last appearance for Wenger’s side coming in their 2-0 EFL Cup defeat to Southampton all the way back in November 2016 – that itself is indicative of his recent plight.
And with Hector Bellerin continuing to prove his worth to the Gunners chief in recent years, it seems pretty clear that Jenkinson has no future at Arsenal, with the 26-year-old even struggling somewhat at Birmingham this term to underline his decline.
Ultimately, it’s clear that the one-time England international simply isn’t good enough for the North London giants anymore, and as such they simply must seek to cash in on the right back come the end of the season.
