Prior to the arrival of Raul Sanllehi, Arsenal’s transfer business could be described as poor. Year in, Year out the Gunners would be slow to conduct business and would often miss out of targets altogether.
The 2015 summer transfer window is one example as just Petr Cech joined the club from London rivals, Chelsea. The side were linked with moves for strikers like Karim Benzema as club legend Thierry Henry even went as far as saying that he would make them champions again (via Sky Sports). Alas, a deal wasn’t to be completed and Cech proved to be the only senior signing that summer.
However, much has changed at the Emirates Stadium, and it all happened on a cold winter’s day in February 2018, when the former Barcelona chief Sanellhi walked through the doors (via Arsenal).
The first challenge was the summer transfer window of 2018, and the 50-year-old smashed it on all accounts, completing the signings of crucial first-team players like Bernd Leno and Matteo Guendouzi.
Leno has proven himself to be a stand out ‘keeper as seen by his stunning double save against Tottenham Hotspur last season, all for just £19.3m (via BBC). In stark contrast, Kepa Arrizabalaga cost Chelsea more than £70m and as seen in his performance against Valencia, getting value for money isn’t always easy.
The season didn’t end as the club wanted it to as they missed out on Champions League football for the third consecutive season.
It seemed for all accounts like signing players would prove difficult, however, nothing is too difficult when you’re Raul Sanllehi. The Arsenal chief ended the summer completing the signings of highly-rated Ligue 1 duo Nicolas Pepe and William Saliba.
Sanllehi has become a hero in north London, many fans taking to social media to hail the Spaniard for the way he conducts business in the transfer market (via talkSPORT).
