Unai Emery should be targeting new defenders in the January transfer window to ease Arsenal’s woes at the back in recent weeks.
The Gunners responded to the 5-1 thrashing against Liverpool by comfortably beating Fulham 4-1 at the Emirates on New Years Day. However, once again their vulnerability at the back was exposed with Ryan Sessegnon missing a host of chances for the Cottagers. Aboubakar Kamara’s goal meant Arsenal have now conceded in each of their last six Premier League games.
Their recent defensive woes should force Emery to consider his options now the January transfer window is officially open. In the absence of Hector Bellerin, Stephen Lichtsteiner has struggled immensely, the Swiss international has looked out of his depth at times this season. Targeting a new right-back could be a wise move for the former PSG boss.
One man who should be on his shortlist is Strasbourg defender – Kenny Lala. Valued at £10.8m by Transfermarkt, the right-back has been one of the most consistent performers in Ligue 1 since completing a free transfer to his current side in the summer of 2017. The defender has gone from strength-to-strength this season establishing himself as one of the top players in his position in the division.
Lala is an attack-minded full-back who loves to get forward – his creative output for a defender is incredible. The 27-year-old has already registered six assists for his team-mates as well as helping his side’s cause with three goals from the back. Not only does Lala excel going forward, but he is also solid at the back, averaging an impressive 2.5 tackles per game, meaning he would add some much-needed solidity to the Arsenal back four (WhoScored).
With his contract set to expire in the summer, the Gunners could kick off their 2019 with a bargain signing.
