Arsenal managed to nudge past Europa League opponents Olympiacos as one player went reasonably under the radar with their performance at the heart of the team.
Alexandre Lacazette scored the only goal of the game as he tapped in Bukayo Saka’s cross from close range after great work on the wing from Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang and the England youth international (via BBC). However, the Gunners could’ve taken a more comfortable lead back to north London if not for their poor finishing in the latter stages of the game.
Lacazette missed a brilliant opportunity to score a second goal just minutes after his first with Jose Sa producing a good save. Sokratis then planted a header onto the bar before Shkodran Mustafi failed with his follow-up effort.
Once again, the German centre-half was the standout player for the Gunners as he put in a superb performance in the middle of the defence. Mustafi won the most aerial duels (6), made the most tackles (3), the second-most clearances (3) and the joint-third most interceptions (1) for his side (via WhoScored).
However, it was his partner David Luiz, who managed to escape the attention of fans with his display at the back. The Brazil international made the joint-most clearances (4) and the most blocks (2) in a solid performance. However, the standout feature of his game was his passing as the former Chelsea man finished with the second-most passes (56) and played the joint-second most long balls (7) for Mikel Arteta’s men.
The Sun agreed with this assessment as they gave him a six out of 10, commenting on his leadership at the back. They said: “Another centre-back that has raised their game under Arteta, the Brazilian did well to recover send balls, and was a leader at the back.” (Source: The Sun)
