Arsenal put in a mixed performance as they narrowly beat Leeds United in the third round of the FA Cup with one player managing to go under the radar.
The Gunners endured a nightmare first-half as they were trounced by the Yorkshire outfit, who had a mammoth 15 shots on goal. That was the joint-most the north London giants had conceded in all competitions this campaign (via BBC).
However, Mikel Arteta’s side seemed to turn a corner after the interval as they scored the winning goal through Reiss Nelson.
Alexandre Lacazette admitted in his interview after the game that their head coach was far from happy with their display in the opening 45 minutes (via The Metro).
The Frenchman was one of the standout performers for his side, winning the man of the match award for last night’s game.
He also came close to opening the scoring before Nelson’s winner as he hit the bar with a free-kick just outside the penalty box.
Reiss Nelson was also one of the standout performers as he notched up the second-most dribbles (4) and the joint-second most shots (2) to add to his goal.
However, it was David Luiz who should be considered an unsung hero for the Gunners last night.
With the side struggling defensively, Luiz proved to read the game well as he made two interceptions (second-most) and four clearances (most) at the centre of defence (via WhoScored).
Football.London agreed with this assessment as they gave the Brazilian a seven out of 10, commenting on a certain aspect of his defending.
They said: “As the pressure grew Luiz did not seem above a few cynical fouls to halt Leeds’ momentum. They largely paid off and he was a model of consistency in the closing minutes.” (Source: football.london)
