Arsenal once again dropped points from a winning position as they drew 1-1 at home to Sheffield United with one player going under the radar.
The draw against the Blades was the club’s 11th of the Premier League campaign, the most in the division, with the north London giants now having dropped 13 points from winning positions this season (via BBC). After an average start to the game, Mikel Arteta’s side took the lead on the stroke of half-time after Gabriel Martinelli turned in a deflected cross from stand-in left-back Bukayo Saka.
Prior to the game, a study by ESPN revealed the Champions League hopefuls had lost nine points due to refereeing decision. That theme continued against Chris Wilder’s side as they were denied what looked a potential penalty after a foul on Nicolas Pepe. They were made to pay for their lack of ruthlessness up front as the Blades equalised in the 83rd minute with John Fleck slotting home a cross from the right.
However, it was Shkodran Mustafi, who proved to be the unsung hero for the team, performing well in his first league start this year. He made the joint-most tackles (2), the most interceptions (5) and the most clearances (6) in a fantastic defensive performance (via WhoScored).
Football.London agreed with this assessment as they gave the German a seven out of 10, commenting on his defensive display.
They said: “The German had a shaky start to the game. Trying to shield the ball out of play, he had his pocket picked, gifting the Blades a shot at goal but grew as the game went on and made some crucial interceptions in the second half and was unlucky not to get a clean sheet for his efforts.” (Source: football.london)
