Arsenal eased past Standard Liege in the group stage of the Europa League last night, beating the Belgian outfit 4-0 at the Emirates Stadium.
Summer signing Gabriel Martinelli stole the show with a magnificent performance in north London, scoring twice and assisting once as the Gunners cruised to a victory over Michel Preud’homme’s men.
The 18-year-old forward achieved a perfect 10 from WhoScored for his performance last night and undoubtedly walked away from the contest as Man of the Match.
However, it was another Arsenal player who quietly impressed last night, keeping a clean sheet on just his second start of the campaign after returning from a serious knee injury.
Rob Holding notched a goal during Arsenal’s 5-0 thrashing of Nottingham Forest in the EFL Cup a fortnight ago and put in another stellar performance for the Gunners in his first European outing with the side this term.
WhoScored awarded the 24-year-old an overall rating of 7.14/10 for his efforts after he blocked two shots, made two clearances and registered an impressive 94.1% pass completion rate against the Jupiler League outfit.
Above all, Holding kept a second clean sheet in as many matches, highlighting his importance to an Arsenal backline who have so far struggled with conceding goals this season; shipping 11 in the Premier League already – more than any other side in the current top six.
Holding will now be looking to make his league bow against Bournemouth this Sunday as the Cherries visit the Emirates, and with performances like the one he put in last night, Unai Emery would perhaps be foolish to overlook him for selection.
