The 17-year-old has been widely tipped to join a Premier League club after a string of stunning performances for Southampton this season, with Arsenal, Liverpool and Chelsea all said to be keen on securing the youngster’s services.
However, it now looks as if The Gunners will most likely complete a move for the midfielder as Saints boss, Nigel Adkins, insists that the club will only sell to a buyer that is prepared to nurture the player’s further development.
Adkins said: “We would only let him go to a club that would nurture him and treat him properly.
“There is going to be no auction for Alex. We love him and want to make him a better player.
“If, down the line, there is a bid we will do the right thing for Alex and not just sell him to the highest bidder.
“There has been a lot of speculation about him but Alex is our player and is playing with a smile on his face.”
Gunners’ boss, Arsene Wenger, is known for chasing raw talent and developing his squad from a young age. First team stars, Theo Walcott, Cesc Fabregas and Alex Song have all flourished under Wenger’s watchful eye.
However, reports that he has been watched personally by Reds’ boss Kenny Dalglish and rumours that the player would personally prefer a move to Chelsea may put a spanner in the works.
The youngster certainly has a bright future either way, if you haven’t seen much of him already, check out this compilation below.
