Only a few weeks ago here at the Football Transfer Tavern we had linked Atletico Madrid forward Adrian Lopez with a move to Arsenal, and the Daily Mirror have claimed that the rumour may soon become reality.
The 24-year-old’s Atletico Madrid future is regarded as being over after falling down the pecking order, leading many clubs around Europe to sit up and take notice in a player who is versatile enough to play anywhere in the front three while possessing the ability to net more than a couple of goals.
Lopez has a £14.7 million buy out clause in his contract, yet it is believed that Gunners boss Arsene Wenger has initially offered £10 million for the player who Atleti could let go in regards to that price.
Wenger is believed to see the player as an option to help out French summer arrival Olivier Giroud who has been good but not ground-breaking since his move to the Emirates Stadium and snaring Lopez for a fee under £14 million would represent relatively good business.
The Spaniard was clinical enough to win the Golden Boot for Spain at the Under-21 European Championships in Denmark in 2011 and regular goal scoring is something Arsenal fans expect at their club, having grown accustomed to the fire-power of Dennis Bergkamp and Thierry Henry over the years in North London.
