Wenger’s signing of £25.2m-rated defender would destroy Arsenal’s season

The Arsenal fans in the Transfer Tavern are hoping that they can complete the signing of Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang before the January window slams shut to round off a very positive month of business for the club.

Arsene Wenger has been uncharacteristically busy in the transfer market this month, and according to reports from Sky Sports, he is set to complete one final deal before the window closes on Wednesday with the signing of Borussia Dortmund’s top-goalscorer Aubameyang. According to the report, the completion of the deal is dependent on whether Dortmund are successful in their quest to sign a replacement for the Gabon international, which is certainly a concern for the resident Gunners propping up our bar in the tavern.

If Arsenal are successful in their bid to sign Aubamyeang, the deal will conclude a very productive month of business for the club which has seen Konstantinos Mavropanos and Henrikh Mkhitaryan arrive at the club, whilst Alexis Sanchez has swapped The Emirates Stadium for Old Trafford.

Naturally, the supporters were disappointed to see Sanchez leave the club for Manchester United last week, but they firmly believe it was wiser to lose him in January and acquire Mkhitaryan in return rather than lose him for nothing next summer.

However, Wenger must avoid making a deadline day move for Chelsea’s David Luiz if he wants to ensure that the progress the club have made is not undone by a rash acquisition of the Brazilian defender.

According to The Daily Star, Arsenal are entertaining the possibility of signing Luiz as part of a swap deal for Olivier Giroud, but they must change their stance on this deal if they want to qualify for the Champions League this season.

Arsenal are crying out for stability within their defensive unit, and Luiz’s history both on and off the field certainly proves that he would bring chaos and unpredictability to the club rather than stability. Rated at £25.5m by Transfermarkt, there is no doubting that Luiz is a fantastic player, but his disruptive nature and tendency to lose concentration at key moments are two characteristics that should deter Wenger from pursuing his signature on deadline day.
